Holy hell. What the ever-loving fuck have I done? Mike stalked down the sidewalk and ducked into a secluded alley before waving his hand and opening a portal to his home. He landed in his living room and dropped onto the couch, raking his fingers through his hair and pulling it at the roots.

He made a deal. Damn it! He’d stuffed his face with half of a full-sized angel food cake before he went to see Crimson. He shouldn’t have been capable of striking a bargain like that. With that much angel magic flowing through his system, he shouldn’t have been able to send Satan a testicle, much less a body and soul.

It didn’t happen. She was joking, so it couldn’t be legit. He’d subdued his demon side with angel magic. Hell, he’d done everything but hog-tie the beast, and Crimson didn’t mean it. But if it wasn’t legit, then why the fuck did his spine tingle and his palm burn like hellfire when they shook? And that sizzle? That was blood. Sure, it was from a papercut and not a purposeful wound, but the Devil didn’t care about details like that. She’d said the words, and Mike had accepted on Satan’s behalf.

I’m a fucking idiot. He deserved to spend eternity in the tarpits for this. Hell’s bells and buckets of blood! He had to fix this.

Taking the back staircase to avoid the restaurant, he marched his ass over to Sweet Destiny’s and threw open the door. The soft floral scent of angelic magic folded around him, making his demon side squirm, but he forced himself across the threshold and rang the bell on the counter. A melodic ding filled the air, and his neighbor drifted from the kitchen into the storefront.

Her copper hair flowed down to her shoulders, and her fair skin held an ethereal glow. Peach lips curved into a comforting smile, and her voice reminded him of a cool stream running through a meadow. “Is it Thursday already? Let me box up your order.”

“No, it’s not. I need your help.”

Her smile brightened. “I’m happy to assist. Tell me what you need.”

“Those cakes, the most recent batch, they had the usual dose of magic?”

“Of course. Just enough to subdue a demon without causing harm. Is there a problem?”

“And the full-sized one you made for me? It’s the same?”

“Yes…”

“So if I ate half the full-sized cake…”

Her eyes widened. “I’d say you’re lucky you’re half human. That much angel magic in one sitting would render a full-blooded demon catatonic for hours.”

“So it should have squelched my magic, right? I shouldn’t have been able to seal a deal after eating that much cake.”

Her brows scrunched. “Well, I don’t know. Did it feel like the deal sealed?”

“Maybe. Fuck. Yeah, it did, but she didn’t mean it. She was joking when she said it. Well, maybe only half-joking, but I know she didn’t mean it. She’s good. Pure. She doesn’t belong in hell.”

Destiny pressed her palms together and closed her eyes for a moment.
